Quality checking leather hides

Before a hide enters production, each piece undergoes a thorough inspection to ensure it meets the highest standards of quality, durability, and aesthetic appeal. The process typically includes:

  • Each hide is laid out fully and examined under natural or controlled lighting.
  • Inspectors look for surface imperfections such as scars, insect bites, scratches, wrinkles, colour inconsistencies, or stretch marks.
  • The natural grain pattern is checked to ensure it meets the intended category specifications (full-grain, corrected grain, nappa).
  • Inspectors run their hands over the hide to detect texture variations, thin spots, or areas with uneven softness or density.
  • This step ensures the leather’s tactile quality matches the category — e.g., full-grain nappa should feel soft, supple, and luxurious.
  • Each hide is measured for size, thickness, and uniformity.
  • Hides are graded based on the severity and location of imperfections. Only those meeting strict thresholds are used for high-end applications; others may be reallocated to corrected-grain or lower-impact uses.
  • Imperfections are marked on the hide (often with chalk or digital annotation) to guide cutting and nesting, ensuring flawed areas are avoided during production.
  • This optimises material utilisation while maintaining product quality.
  • Each hide is logged and approved before it enters cutting or finishing.
  • Documentation ensures traceability, so any issue detected later can be traced back to the inspected hide.

Only hides that meet stringent visual, tactile, and dimensional standards proceed to cutting and assembly, guaranteeing premium quality for automotive, upholstery, or luxury leather applications.

Cutting process overview

  • We use state‑of‑the‑art automated leather/textile cutting machines that reduce typical cutting time for a full automotive interior from nearly four hours down to approximately 15 minutes.
  • These machines deliver exceptional cut‑edge quality, consistent accuracy and improved use of material — crucial when working with premium hides or textiles.
  • Our operators are trained to program cutting files, optimise nesting layouts, minimise waste and ensure each part meets specification whether for one‑off or batch runs.
  • From import hides/textiles to delivery of cut packages, the process is tightly controlled: hides/textiles are inspected, processed for clean edges, encoded for traceability, then cut, bundled, and prepared for the next production stage (sewing, fitting, shipping).
  • For customers requiring custom designs, our system supports bespoke patterns, logos, shapes and non‑automotive applications — enabling versatility beyond standard automotive interiors.

From automotive seat covers and panels to other upholstery uses, we can cut bespoke shapes, set‑up production runs, manage colour‑coded bundles, and prepare parts ready for sewing or fitting.

Our nesting software and machine layout planning reduce off‑cuts and maximise usable material — reflecting our commitment to efficiency and cost‑effectiveness for clients.

Each job is logged, parts sequentially numbered, and assembled in bundles for seamless hand‑off into sewing or assembly. This ensures full end‑to‑end accountability and enables us to maintain high standards of service.

The automation in cutting drastically reduces lead times. Whether you have a rush job or require regular production runs, our capability enables responsiveness.
